PFAS-Certified Water Filters: The Complete List (2026)

Every home water filter with a current NSF, WQA or IAPMO certification for PFOA, PFOS or total PFAS, in one sortable table linked to each certifier's listing.

CleanWaterCritic editorial team

Compiled from the public NSF, WQA and IAPMO R&T certification directories, checked 2026-10-14, and the EPA's PFAS drinking water rule

Table of Contents

TL;DR

Clean Water Critic checked the NSF, WQA and IAPMO R&T directories on October 14, 2026 and found 125 home water filter products or product families with a current certification for PFAS reduction. 94 are certified for PFOA and PFOS only; 31 carry a broader claim covering total PFAS or five named PFAS. Pitchers, faucet mounts, under-sink filters, reverse osmosis, whole-house and fridge filters are all represented, and every row links to the certifier's own listing.

We recommend products we believe in. When you buy through links on our site we may earn a commission, which never changes what we recommend or what you pay. This page carries no affiliate links in the table. See our affiliate disclosure for details.

Plenty of water filters say they "reduce PFAS." Far fewer hold a certification that a third party lists publicly and keeps auditing. This page lists the ones that do: every home filter we could find with a current certification for PFOA, PFOS or total PFAS reduction, taken directly from the three certifiers that publish searchable directories for drinking water filters.

Listings checked: October 14, 2026. NSF's and IAPMO R&T's directories both reported their data as current as of October 13, 2026. WQA's directory was queried on October 14, 2026.

The short version

  • 125 products or product families hold a current PFAS certification across the three directories: 90 listed by IAPMO R&T, 27 by WQA and 11 by NSF (a few appear in two directories).
  • 94 are certified for PFOA and PFOS only. 31 carry a broader claim: "Total PFAS" (a seven-compound mixture) or five named PFAS on a few whole-house systems.
  • NSF lists no products with a PFAS claim under NSF/ANSI 58 (the reverse osmosis standard) or NSF P473. Every reverse osmosis system in the table is certified through IAPMO R&T or WQA.
  • Several of the best known "PFAS filters" are not on any of these lists, including Clearly Filtered, Epic Pure, LifeStraw Home and Berkey. They rely on lab testing they commissioned themselves. We list them separately below.

What the EPA's 2024 PFAS rule says

On April 10, 2024 the EPA finalized the first enforceable drinking water limits for PFAS (EPA rule summary):

CompoundEnforceable limit (MCL)Health goal (MCLG)
PFOA4.0 pptZero
PFOS4.0 pptZero
PFHxS10 ppt10 ppt
PFNA10 ppt10 ppt
HFPO-DA (GenX)10 ppt10 ppt
Mixtures of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA and PFBSHazard Index of 1Hazard Index of 1

Under the 2024 rule, utilities had until 2027 to finish initial monitoring and until 2029 to fix any exceedance. On May 18, 2026 the EPA proposed two changes: keep the PFOA and PFOS limits but let systems request two more years, to 2031, and rescind the limits for PFHxS, PFNA, GenX and the Hazard Index mixture. Those are proposals open for comment, not final rules, as of the date above.

For a fuller background on what PFAS are and where they come from, see our explainer on PFAS forever chemicals.

Certified versus tested

The EPA's own consumer fact sheet tells you to look for certification to NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 for PFAS reduction, and to confirm it in the certifier's product directory (EPA home filter fact sheet, PDF). That distinction is the whole point of this table.

  • Certified means an accredited body (NSF, WQA, IAPMO R&T, CSA or UL) tested the product, publishes the listing, controls exactly which claims the brand may make, and keeps auditing the factory and retesting the product.
  • Tested to a standard means the brand paid a lab to run the test and published the report. That can be perfectly honest, but nobody re-checks it, and you cannot look it up in a directory.

Two more things to know before you read the table:

  1. A standard number alone tells you nothing about PFAS. NSF/ANSI 53 covers dozens of contaminants. A filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead is not certified for PFAS unless PFOA, PFOS or Total PFAS appears in its reduction claims. We only included rows where it does.
  2. Certification does not promise 4 ppt. The PFOA and PFOS protocol, first published as NSF P473 and later folded into NSF/ANSI 53 and 58, challenges a filter with 1,500 ppt of PFOA plus PFOS combined and requires 70 ppt or less in the filtered water (NSF announcement). The EPA notes that these certifications do not yet show a filter will reach its new limits. The newer total PFAS claims are tighter: IAPMO's listings define a seven-compound mixture (PFOA 500 ppt, PFOS 1,000 ppt, PFHxS 300 ppt, PFBS 260 ppt, PFNA 50 ppt, PFHpA 40 ppt, PFDA 10 ppt) that must come out at 20 ppt or less.

How to read the table

  • Certified for shows the exact claim on the listing. "PFOA + PFOS" is the common claim. "Total PFAS" is the broader seven-compound claim. Two whole-house systems and one Pentair family name five compounds individually.
  • Capacity is the rated gallons on the certification, which is the number that matters for PFAS. A cartridge that keeps improving taste past this point may no longer be reducing PFAS. "n/a" usually means a reverse osmosis system rated in gallons per day instead.
  • Certifier listing opens the certifier's own page for that product or company. IAPMO links show the file number. If a listing ever disagrees with this page, the listing wins.
  • Click any column header to sort. On a phone, scroll the table sideways.

We grouped one row per product family. Color variants, regional SKUs of the same system and separately listed replacement cartridges are folded into the family row.

Replacement cost per certified gallon

Capacity on a PFAS certification is often much lower than the "lasts up to" figure on the box, so we worked out what the common consumer cartridges cost per certified gallon. Pack prices are rounded from Amazon list prices on October 14, 2026 and will move.

CartridgePack pricePrice per cartridgeCertified capacityCost per certified gallon
PUR Plus pitcher filter (PPF951K), 3-pack~$28~$940 gal$0.23
PUR Plus faucet filter (RF-9999), 2-pack~$28~$14100 gal$0.14
ZeroWater official replacement filter, 2-pack~$24~$1215 gal$0.79
Aquasana Claryum 2-Stage AQ-5200R set~$74~$74500 gal$0.15

The ZeroWater number stands out. Its PFOA and PFOS certification is rated at 15 gallons per cartridge, so a household drinking a gallon a day would need a new cartridge about every two weeks to stay within the certified range.

Claims PFAS reduction, but not certified

These popular products advertise PFAS reduction backed by lab testing the brand commissioned. When we checked the NSF, WQA and IAPMO R&T directories on October 14, 2026, none of them carried a PFAS claim in any of the three.

  • Clearly Filtered pitcher. Says it is independently tested to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 and P473. Its only WQA listing is NSF/ANSI 42; it has no listing in the NSF or IAPMO directories.
  • Epic Pure pitcher. Publishes third-party lab results for PFOA and PFOS. Epic Water Filters has an IAPMO file, but it carries no PFAS claim.
  • LifeStraw Home pitcher. Says it meets the NSF P473 PFOA and PFOS requirement in third-party testing. LifeStraw's WQA listings cover NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 claims, none of them PFAS.
  • Berkey (Black Berkey elements). Publishes a lab report for PFOA reduction. Berkey has no listing in any of the three directories.

None of this means those products fail to reduce PFAS. It means you are relying on the brand's evidence rather than a certifier's, and you cannot verify the claim against a public listing.

What we left out, and how we built this

We searched each directory for PFOA, PFOS and total PFAS reduction claims under NSF/ANSI 53, NSF/ANSI 58 and NSF P473, then read the listing for every match. We excluded commercial and food-service equipment (office coolers, bottle fillers, restaurant cartridges), listings for systems sold only outside the US, and replacement cartridges listed on their own when the system they fit is already in the table. CSA Group and UL also certify drinking water filters; their directories are not built for public product search, so this table does not cover them.

We did not test any of these filters ourselves. Every certification fact on this page comes from the certifier listing linked in its row. If you spot a product we missed or a listing that has changed, tell us and we will update the table and the date above.

Choosing from the list

The table answers "is it certified?" It does not tell you which one fits your kitchen. Start by finding out what is in your water: our guide to testing your tap water covers utility reports and lab kits. Then:

Citing this table

Journalists, researchers and other sites are welcome to cite or link this table. Please name Clean Water Critic, link to this page and include the "checked" date, since certifications change. For anything consequential, confirm the specific listing with the certifier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which water filters are certified to remove PFAS?
As of October 14, 2026, we found 125 home filter products or product families with a current PFAS certification from NSF, WQA or IAPMO R&T. They include PUR and ZeroWater pitchers, PUR, ZeroWater and Culligan faucet mounts, AquaTru countertop reverse osmosis, Waterdrop, APEC, Aquasana, A.O. Smith and Culligan under-sink systems, several whole-house systems, and GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and Haier fridge filters. The full table on this page links each one to the certifier's listing.
What does PFAS certified mean on a water filter?
It means an accredited certifier (NSF, WQA, IAPMO R&T, CSA or UL) tested the product against a PFAS reduction requirement in NSF/ANSI 53, NSF/ANSI 58 or the older NSF P473 protocol, lists it publicly, and audits it on an ongoing basis. Most certifications cover PFOA and PFOS only. A smaller group carries a total PFAS claim that covers a mixture of seven PFAS compounds.
Is tested to NSF standards the same as NSF certified?
No. Tested to a standard means the brand paid a lab to run the test once and published the result. Certified means a certifier lists the product, controls the claim, and re-audits the factory and retests the product over time. Both can be honest, but only a certification can be checked in a public directory.
Do Brita filters remove PFAS?
Brita's standard and Elite pitcher filters are not certified for PFAS. Brita's under-sink system, model BUSS01 with the BUSF01 cartridge, is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS reduction, and the separate Brita PRO BP150NJ whole-house system carries an IAPMO total PFAS listing.
Does a certified filter bring PFAS below the EPA limit of 4 ppt?
Not necessarily. The EPA itself notes that PFAS filter certifications were not written around its 4 ppt limits. The original PFOA and PFOS protocol required a filter to reduce a combined 1,500 ppt challenge to 70 ppt or less. Newer total PFAS claims on IAPMO listings require 20 ppt or less of the PFAS mixture. Check your water's actual PFAS level and replace cartridges on schedule.
How do I check whether my filter is certified for PFAS?
Find the exact model number on the box or housing, then search it in the certifier's directory: info.nsf.org for NSF, find.wqa.org for WQA, and pld.iapmo.org for IAPMO R&T. Look for PFOA, PFOS or Total PFAS in the reduction claims column, not just the standard number, because a filter can be certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead without any PFAS claim.
