If you ran a hardness test on the water before and after, the GPG number would be essentially the same. The minerals are still there. What changes is their tendency to deposit as scale. So a salt-free system protects plumbing and appliances well, but it will not give you slick soft water, will not stop spotty dishes, and will not help dry skin the way ion exchange does. Anyone selling a salt-free unit as a "softener" that delivers all the benefits of true softening is overstating it.

How to size the best water softener for your home
Sizing a salt-based softener comes down to grain capacity, and getting it right matters. Undersize it and the unit regenerates constantly, burning through salt and wearing out faster. Oversize it wildly and you waste money and let resin sit too long between cycles.
Start with your hardness number. Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon, or GPG. You can get this from a cheap test strip, your city water report, or a lab test.
